Teaching Roman Numerals

We ran into Roman Numerals in my 10 year-old’s school work. She is good at letting me know when she doesn’t get something. Sort of. She shows it through frustration and shutting down. (“Mom! You are always telling me that everything I’m doing is wrong!) So, as a homeschool mom, I search for resources to reinforce or teach a concept with me (and the emotions of our relationship) getting out of the way. Since we live in the Google and Youtube age, it is easy to find resources at my fingertips. It took a little bit of time to preview some videos, so I thought I’d post my list here in case it can help another family.

Let’s be honest. We parents know Roman Numeral probably up to 100 (maybe) with a tiny little review, but wait, was there another symbol for 100? Wait, now that I’m thinking about it there might be one for 50. Suddenly I get interested in remembering.

In my list (below), there are videos that are really beyond her learning need, but it would be a great review for 12-year-old brother. And… since my 16 year-old is sitting in the same room, he might pick up a little review. Voila! Family learning fun! They can’t stop themselves from clicking on the next video in case it is better than that last “lame” one. By the end, they have seen the concepts several times and the brain will have absorbed more than meets the eye.

Here’s the list in sort of beginning to more advanced order. By putting the names next to them, it takes some pressure off of watching them or creates intrigue. It cracks me up how little subtle things like this works.
